Tack Options

PLEASE NOTE THAT AN ASTM/SEI APPROVED HELMET IS REQUIRED AT ALL TIMES WHILE MOUNTED REGARDLESS OF TACK OPTIONS.

Tack Options

1 Dressage: Dressage saddle or All purpose saddle.  Snaffle bridle with a dropped or plain noseband or a double bridle with a plain noseband depending on the age of the horse. Dressage tack can be used on any breed.

2.  Western Working:  Western working saddle.  Western Bridle with either a bosal, western style snaffle, or curb depending on the age of the horse.  Working Western tack can be used on any breed.

3 Spanish:  Traditional Spanish Saddle and Bridle.

4 Portuguese:  Traditional Portuguese Saddle and Bridle.

5 Thoroughbreds and other native UK breeds: Close Contact or All Purpose saddle.  Hunt type snaffle bridle with a plain noseband or a Double bridle with a plain noseband.

6 Quarter Horses and other USA breeds:  Western working saddle.  Western bridle with either a bosal, western type snaffle, or curb depending on the age of the horse.


Bits

1 The acceptable bits are snaffles, curbs, bosals, and pelhams.  See the particular level you are entering for the acceptable bit at that level.

2 All mouthpieces have to be made of smooth metal, rubber, or plastic.  No mouthpiece shall be less than 10mm in diameter.

3 All curb chains or curb straps must lay flat in the chin groove.

4 The following are prohibited:

  • Any twisted bits.
  •  Wire
  • Gags
  • Double mouthpieces on one bit.
  • High ports, spoons, and spades on curbs.
  • Bit connectors on pelhams and kimberwicks.



Protective Boots

Leg protection such as tendon boots, splint boots, and bell boots can be used in the Ease of Handling and Speed phases at any WEUSA Event. 

No Polos wraps are allowed except in warm-up.  Boots are allowed in the warm-up for the Dressage.

No boots are allowed in the Dressage phase. 

Whips

Whips are allowed in the warm-up at any level. 

They are only allowed in the following levels and only in Dressage competition:  Lead Line, Walk/Trot, Novice, Basic, and Preliminary.
